Dear Virginia Tech Architecture Alumni,

The 2005/2006 academic year marked the third year of the new School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech. The School, which includes architecture, industrial design, and interior design programs, remains a part of the College of Architecture & Urban Studies, which itself has expanded to include three schools—the School of Architecture + Design, the School of Public and International Affairs, and the Myers-Lawson School of Construction—and two departments—the Department of Art & Art History and the Department of Landscape Architecture.

The School of Architecture + Design continues to build on a tradition of excellence established with the beginning of the College of Architecture in 1964. Each of the programs in the School is among the best in America. For the past three years, the Architecture Program has ranked among the top ten programs in America. This past year the Interior Design program was also ranked among the top ten in America. And, in 2005, for the second time in two years, the Industrial Design Program was among a select group of programs worldwide to be invited to exhibit at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. [At the ICFF in 2003 the Industrial Design Program won the ‘Editors Choice Award’ as the ‘Best Design School’]

While we are pleased with these external assessments of our School, we are equally proud of the fact that the established values of our unique educational environment continue to flourish in times of vast social, economic, and technological change. In these challenging times, we are constantly striving to build an academic environment that not only develops vivid imaginations and refined constructive skills but also provides students, and faculty, with the means to reflect deeply upon the nature of their activity and its significance for our lives.

To build upon our strengths and advance our reputation we are asking for your help. The School of Architecture + Design is conducting a brief survey of our now 4000+ alumni. An on-line, password-only version will also be available later this spring.

The survey’s purpose is twofold. First, we would like to generate an accurate demographic profile of our former students. Second, we want to know how you view your educational experience in the program now that you have spent time in your profession.

The results of this survey will be posted on this website and mailed to all School of Architecture + Design alumni by Summer, 2006.

Sincerely,

Scott Poole, AIA, Director
School of Architecture + Design
